Saint Augustine’s Table

According to Augustine’s ancient biographer, Possidius, the table to which the Bishop of Hippo regularly invited guests had the following words inscribed upon it:

Let him who takes pleasure in mauling the lives of the absent
Know his own is not such as to fit him to sit at this table.

Apparently, Augustine took the injunction so seriously that when his bishop friends would lapse into damaging discourse about those not there, he would get up and demand them to stop, threatening that he would either go to his room, or that the lines would be erased from the table.
