On the Value of Certain Bedtime Stories

The human imagination is a powerful, beautiful thing. C.S. Lewis dedicated his imagination to the mediation of the Christian Gospel to children. Personally, I have memories of being about seven or eight years old and asking my mom to read me the first book from the Narnia series “one more time.” The mystique of a snow-filled wardrobe and a witch compelled me with unspoken forces. As I look back, what I retain from having taken in Lewis’ fiction at such a young age is not so much the memory of a simplistic story as an affection for the beauty of the good news that God loves us and gave himself for us - that God is good.
